## What is a halving?

A **halving** cuts the number of new coins that miners receive for each block in half. It is written into the coin's code and happens after a fixed number of blocks, not on a fixed date:

Both coins therefore halve roughly **every four years**. Because blocks are sometimes a bit faster or slower than the target, the exact day is only an estimate until the block is actually mined.

## How the countdown is calculated

- **Blocks left** = next halving block − current block height
- **Time left** ≈ blocks left × target block time (10 minutes for Bitcoin, 2.5 minutes for Litecoin)
- **Estimated date** = now + time left
